Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox

Flash has recently updated to version 11.3. Some users are reporting issues with this version of Flash and Firefox. Flash videos or games on sites like Facebook or YouTube may appear, black, white or grey and never play. We'll show some possible fixes.

There are several steps that you can try to remedy this situation. Each step is valuable in troubleshooting this issue.

Please try these steps in order.

If RealPlayer is installed, try this first

Turn off Web Download & Recording in RealPlayer

  1. Launch RealPlayer
  2. Click the RealPlayer icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Preferences.
  3. Choose Download & Recording from the left hand panel
  4. Uncheck "Enable Web Download & Recording for these installed browsers"
  5. Click OK and close RealPlayer
  6. Restart Firefox

This will remove the RealPlayer Browser Record extension from the Firefox Add-ons Manager.

Tip: As an alternative to the RealPlayer Browser Record extension, you may want to try the Easy YouTube Video Downloader or one of the other amazing Firefox Add-ons.

Disable the RealPlayer Browser Record extension in Firefox

Note: The RealPlayer Browser Record extension has been blocklisted. If you re-enabled it afterwards, you can use the following steps to disable it again.

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the RealPlayer Browser Record extension.
  4. Click the Disable button.
  5. Click Restart now. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

Uninstall RealPlayer

If disabling or turning off the Browser Record feature did not resolve the issue, please try uninstalling RealPlayer from your computer: Uninstalling RealPlayer on Windows

Downgrade Flash

If the previous steps did not resolve your issue or Flash is constantly crashing, you should uninstall Flash 11.3 and downgrade to Flash 10.3 or 11.2. You can find steps for downgrading Flash in: Flash 11.3 crashes

Flash 11.3 crashes

Adobe has recently updated Flash to version 11.3. Some users have reported that this version of Flash is crashing more frequently than previous versions of Flash. If you are experiencing excess crashes, please downgrade to Flash 10.3 or Flash 11.2.

Step 1: Uninstall Flash 11.3

To uninstall Flash 11.3 on Windows, you will need to use the uninstaller provided by Adobe.

Note: You may want to write down these steps or print them out as you will have to close Firefox during this process.

  1. Download the uninstaller program from Adobe - uninstall_flash_player.exe (671 KB)
  2. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (File menu in Windows XP) and then click Exit.
  3. Run the uninstall Flash program that you download and follow the prompts.
  4. When you are finished, start Firefox again and continue with the next section.

Step 2: Install Flash 10.3 or 11.2

Important: If you install Flash 10.3, you will get a player with all known security patches applied but without all of the features of Flash 11.2. If you install Flash 11.2, your player might not have all of the known security updates applied.

The following instructions will show you how to download and install Flash 10.3. If you wish to install Flash 11.2 instead, you can get it from the Flash Player Archive page. For more information about installing Flash 11.2, please see How do I revert to a previous version of Flash Player? on the Adobe forum.

Note: You may want to write down these steps or print them out as you will have to close Firefox during this process.

  1. Download Flash 10.3 from the Adobe site - install_flash_player_10_plugin.exe
  2. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (File menu in Windows XP) and then click Exit.
  3. Open your downloads folder and double-click the file named install_flash_player_10_plugin.exe to start the installation.
  4. Follow the instructions in the installer. When the installation is complete you can open Firefox again.

Important: It will be important to install the update that fixes this issues as using the latest version of Flash is critical to keeping your computer safe.
